My Mac cleaner stopped working: what to do

Apple is phasing out Rosetta 2, the layer that lets apps built for Intel Macs run on Apple Silicon. Cleaners and utilities that were never updated are among the first to go. Here is how to tell whether that is your problem, and what to do about it.

Updated

Why apps are stopping

Macs with Apple Silicon run apps built only for Intel through Rosetta 2. Apple has said that from macOS 28, expected in 2027, Rosetta will only remain for certain older games, and other Intel-only apps will stop working. macOS 27 still includes it. Since macOS 26.4, opening an Intel-only app shows a warning that support is ending.

macOS Tahoe 26 is also the last version of macOS for Intel Macs themselves. If your Mac has an Intel processor, your apps keep working as they do today; you simply will not get new versions of macOS.

Check which of your apps are Intel-only

  1. Hold the Option key, open the Apple menu and choose System Information.
  2. In the sidebar, under Software, choose Applications.
  3. Click the Kind column to sort. Apps marked Intel need Rosetta. Apps marked Apple Silicon or Universal will keep working.

For a single app, select it in Finder and choose File › Get Info. Kind shows Application (Intel) for Intel-only apps.

Other reasons a cleaner stops working

  • A macOS update reset its permissions. Check System Settings › Privacy & Security › Full Disk Access and make sure the app is still switched on.
  • A subscription or licence ran out, and the app now scans but will not clean.
  • The developer has withdrawn it. If the app has had no update in a long time, check their website before relying on it.

What to do

First, check whether the developer offers an Apple Silicon or Universal version; an update may be all you need. If not, it is time to replace it.

Clean Rabbit is a Universal app: one download that runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, with no Rosetta needed. It is free, about 10 MB, and covers the everyday jobs: junk and caches, large files, duplicates, removing apps and startup items. If you are choosing between options, see how it compares.

Remove the old cleaner properly

Cleaners often install helpers that start at login or sit in the menu bar. Dragging the app to the Bin leaves those behind, still trying to run. Remove it with its leftovers, as described in uninstalling apps on a Mac completely, then check Startup Items for anything it left behind.

Questions

Will my Intel Mac stop working?

No. Intel Macs keep running macOS Tahoe 26 and the apps installed on them. They will not receive later versions of macOS.

Does Clean Rabbit need Rosetta?

No. It is a Universal app that runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Can I keep using an Intel-only app until then?

Yes. Intel-only apps keep working through macOS 27. Expect a warning each time you open one.
